kyle and mason | whitehorse children's photographer

I have been trying to line up a session with this family forever. Their oldest son, Kyle is a real dynamo and getting to meet him was a much-anticipated event, let me tell ya.

This young man has been in and out of the hospital with some serious medical concerns in his eleven years. He was born a mere 4lbs 6oz. and was diagnosed with Scoliosis (curvature of the spine) at the age of five. It was also discovered that he also had a form of Spina Bifida Occulta with Tethered Cord Syndrome.

He has undergone not one but two spinal cord surgeries and in the time since those operations, along with relearning to walk thanks to many hours of physio and occupational therapy, it was also discovered that he had yet another challenge to add to his list : Muscular Myopathy.

He deals with daily chronic pain, hypertension, a heart murmur and mitral regurgitation.

Yet despite these ongoing difficulties, Kyle is a charming, confident and outgoing young man with a penchant for grossing girls out and being wickedly cheeky (and oddly charming at the same time! fart jokes included!!) He is very affectionate and loving (as seen in images with his little brother, Mason) and has clearly made peace with his vulnerability long ago.

While his mom, Tabitha says that days where his pain is manageable enough to allow his silly personality to shine through are few and far between, when they do occur, they are enjoyed by everyone lucky enough to be in his presence. Kyle, I hope that the doctors who are working with you help you find a way to have more silly days and far, far fewer painful ones.

Thanks so much for coming out to my farm guys. It was so wonderful to finally meet you all and to create such meaningful images for you to enjoy for a long time to come. ♥

If you know a family with a child living with a life-altering illness or disability, please put them in touch with Helping Hearts. This organization will connect them with me (or another photographer in their area) who will capture meaningful images like these to help them celebrate their little ones and hopefully find a little healing throughout the process of learning to live with some of the challenges imposed on a family during trying times such as these.

darwin & aria | whitehorse children's photographer

After such a long run of bellies and babies over the past few weeks, spending my morning with Darwin and Aria was a very welcomed change of pace. These two kept me on my toes, in fact, I spent much of the session catching up and even running now and then!

I loved playing down at the shorline of the Yukon River, showing Darwin how to identify wishing rocks and exchanging knock-knock jokes.

Aria was a little cautious of me and my "black box" in the beginning but she was clearly enamored with the fields of wildflowers that we found everywhere... lupins, daisies, dandelions and even arctic poppies. Wow.

This is one sibling pair that really, really love each other. Sweetest thing you've seen all day? Yeah, I thought so!

introducing louis | whitehorse newborn photographer

So you've seen the maternity photos and you probably saw his birthday slideshow and now, this is the little one for whom all the fuss is being made. This is Louis (you can call him "Lewis" or "Louie", both are fab, just like him!!). I think he's just wonderful. He reminded us of his stubborn streak at the beginning of his session but our patience (and persistence) paid off. I think he decided that my cozy beanbag was *the* place to be and finally gave in to a little sleepy-time.

I know that it won't be long till this beautiful little boy figures out just how loved he is and how infinitely cool his mama & daddy are... and that's bound to be something he inherits. Stole my heart in an extra-large way. *SWOON!*

and seriously... tell me that isn't the BEST head full of hair you've seen all day!

And hopefully by now, you know the drill...

What type of investment should I expect from my session & portraits? | whitehorse children's photographer

When it comes to making purchasing decisions about priceless and lasting investments, it’s important to do your homework. The birth of a child, her first steps, his high school graduation – these are milestones that don’t wait for a stimulus package but deserve more preservation than a point and shoot camera can provide. With your family growing and changing at break neck speed, it is important to you to capture these memories today. So now, more than ever, parents are wondering what type of investment they should expect from their photography session and portraits.

Hiring a professional photographer that specializes in children’s photography is the first important step in ensuring that your investment is realized.
Photographers are passionate about their subject matter and professional children’s photographers are no exception. While some folks with cameras are great at taking pictures of stunning architecture or breathtaking sunsets, professional children’s photographers are uniquely skilled in capturing the relationship a child has with the world around them.

Know your photographer’s style.
Some professional children’s photographers may use natural light and have a candid style, while others shoot exclusively in black and white, or include the use studio lights, antique furniture or beautiful costumes. Make sure you spend time looking the photographer’s web site to ensure that their style achieves your desired look.

Understand the session fee.
Session fees do not simply cover the time behind the camera during the shoot. You are investing not only in skill and experience, but also many hours of preparation and post-production work. Because you are essentially commissioning a photographer to create one-of-a-kind art for your home, your photographer will have a real sense of who you are and what you are looking to get out of this experience well before they ever pick up the camera.

Session Day – be yourself & bring happiness to the shoot.
You’ve invested money and time in a professional, so make sure you do everything you can to set your session up for success. Best advice? Relax and model happiness. Children’s photographers work with all sorts of personalities everyday, so no need to tell your little one to smile or how to perform during the shoot.

What really happens behind the curtain.

The images have been taken and you may now be anxious to see the results. Your photographer really has a good sense for who you are at this point and they’ll spend genuine time going through the images, choosing the very best ones, and taking care to touch up each memory individually. Rest assured, this is no small effort. At the hand of your photographer, this is when a high quality image takes the next step and becomes your personal art.

Ordering and making financial decisions.

Whether in person or through an online gallery, when the date comes for the ordering meeting, the best thing you can do to facilitate great decisions for your investment is invest in a babysitter. You will have lots of choices to consider and your experienced professional children’s photographer will easily guide you through the process. Little ones underfoot during the meeting can be distracting.
So while commissioning a professional children’s photographer is a bit more of a financial investment than hiring a friend to take pictures, the real investment matters most beyond the wallet. A professional children’s photographer will ensure that these captured moments and milestones not only represent your life, but become your most cherished art.

tattoos and piercings | whitehorse photographer

Sometimes I get invited to participate in some exciting, creative events and this time I had just finished a maternity photo session and happened to have all my camera gear on hand... so of course I got in there and played along. These incredible models were invited by the good folks at Triple J's Music in downtown Whitehorse to come out and show off their body art. One of my good friends and clients, Jen (see her maternity photos here) is the resident body piercer and she wanted images of body art in her studio.

yeah, those are piercings. Wild, no?

This beautiful young lady is the niece of Jordi, the co-owner of Triple J's (see her photos at the bottom of this post!)

This is Dan. He's the tattooer for Triple J's... he was also the other photographer on set that day. We had so much fun, didn't we, Dan?!?!

This is Dan's wife and portfolio. Lovely.

This is one of the owners of Triple J's. She was so fun to work with and um... HAWT!! lol I envy people with enough guts to get this much ink. Wow.

This beauty is Akiko. She was the resident makeup artist... Y'think?!?! ROWR!

baby louis | whitehorse newborn photographer

Last week, I had the pleasure of accompanying this wonderful family on the journey of a lifetime. Darcy & Jesse, whose maternity session I blogged about HERE, invited me to join them at Whitehorse Hospital as they waited (well, Jesse waited but Darcy worked!) on their beautiful baby boy's arrival. This is the story of Baby Louis' birth. Enjoy.

If you or someone you know is expecting between now and the end of August 2011, be aware that I am looking for a few more families to let me document their birth story. This is a portfolio building exercise for me so there is no charge for my services. Families who participate in these sessions will receive a slideshow much like this to share online with loved ones. Call 668-2296 or email info@vanessafallephotography.com for more information.

anne & manuel | whitehorse maternity photographer

Okay, I know I say this all the time but I love my job. Maternity photography is so much fun because my clients are so happy and full of anticipation!! And honestly, how could a person NOT love that kind of energy!

This amazing couple was no different. Anne & Manuel were so warm, welcoming and so stinkin' funny! I can't tell you how much time we spent cracking each other up! These two are welcoming their first baby into the world later this summer and I know that he/she will be lavished with love and adoration... with a mom and dad so cool, funny and fun to be with, how can a kid go wrong!

We spent a portion of their maternity session indoors but then, since the Whitehorse weather was absolutely PERFECT (yes, sometimes the weather man is right), we headed outdoors to include some of the beautiful property that they live on in the images. I couldn't resist this image of them smoochin' at the woodshed. I think this is one of my faves from the day!

What a wonderful couple. I know the waiting is going to be tough for the next few weeks but it will all be worth it! Can't wait to meet your wee one! Thanks so much, Anne & Manuel for inviting me into your beautiful home.

introducing baby h | whitehorse children's photographer

Last month, I had the pleasure of photographing this fine couple, and we created some wonderful images and lovely memories. Then we had to play the waiting game while the wee one prepared to make his arrival. Not long ago, I received the email that he was here. I couldn't wait to meet him!

He's absolutely just as sweet as he looks. He was a total peach for our session, slept plenty, woke up just enough to see his beautiful dark blue eyes and stole the hearts of every single person in the room. I know that this fine young man has chosen the PERFECT mommy & daddy. This family was truly bursting at the seams with joy and love. What a pleasure to be a part of this incredible energy for the few hours I was in their company, photographing their darling baby boy. Congratulations, Mom & Dad. He's just perfect!

darcy & jesse | whitehorse maternity photographer

Wow. It seems like all I've been doing lately is photographing newborns and maternity, newborns and more maternity! There is one heck of a baby-boom happening in Whitehorse right now. I can imagine the nursing staff at Whitehorse General are run off their feet!

A short while ago, I had the privilege of photographing this wonderful couple. Meet Darcy & Jesse. They are the greatest, most laid-back couple ever. We had a total blast shooting in their incredibly bright & cheery home (except for the attack of the killer bees incident - yay for Jesse, who came to our rescue!)

Darcy & Jesse are expecting their first baby TOMORROW!! I don't know if he/she is going to be on time or not but I *can* tell you that these guys have invited me to join them on their birth experience to document the story in photos. I can't even tell you how excited I am. I have wanted to photograph births since starting this business and these guys get to be my first family! Lucky me!
And of course, having such good looking parents pretty much guarantees a beautiful baby! And while it's not for me to spill the beans, the baby names that these guys have selected are incredible. Just for the record, I hope they get to use their boy name because it's just that awesome. And no, it's not Megatron, although that *would* be cool!

And seriously, this woman is all belly. You can't even tell she's pregnant if you see her from behind. Darcy says the waddle is a dead giveaway though!

And just between you and me, I think Jesse is pretty darn excited to meet his new little person.

C'mon little babe! Everyone's waiting to meet you. I know I, for one am not straying very far from the phone... that's definitely one phone call I don't want to miss!
